Adding New Private Name Servers at Godaddy

By jalex • Web Hosting • 21 Sep 2009

If your webhost offers private name servers (e.g. NS1.YOURWEBSITE.COM and NS2.YOURWEBSITE.COM), you will need to add the nameserver to your domain registrar before you can use it. In this case, let’s assume you are using godaddy as your domain registrar.

To Add the private name server to your godaddy account:

  • first, login to your godaddy account using your account username (which may be the same as your customer number) and password.
  • Go to Domains -> My Domains
  • Click on the domain you’d like to set up private nameservers for
  • Click on (add) under ‘Host Summary’ located on the bottom left.
  • For “Host Name:” input “NS1″ (no quotes) in the box.
  • For “Host IP 1:” input your primary IP address
  • Click “Ok” – the first nameserver has been created.
  • Click on (add) under ‘Host Summary’ on the bottom left again.
  • For “Host Name:” input “NS2″ (no quotes) in the box.
  • For “Host IP 2: enter the IP as your primary address, one number higher.(e.g. if the ip assigned by your host is 79.86.94.157 during sign up, use this as your primary IP for ns1. For ns2 you would use: 79.86.94.158)
  • Click “OK”
  • You can now use the new nameservers to any of your domains.

It usually takes a day or two (or quicker) for this to propagate and be useable.
